About Handicare

Handicare Stairlifts: since 1886

Handicare has been providing lifting solutions to those with physical challenges for 130 years.

Jan Hamer & Co Lift Manufacturers

Handicare Stairlifts goes back to the 19th century. One of the company’s founders, Mr Jan Hamer, started his own business in 1886 selling lifts and other items. In 1889, Mr Mulder became a partner and the company name was changed to Jan Hamer & Co. The business grew rapidly into the biggest Dutch manufacturer of lifts. When Mr Hamer died in 1919, the business continued under the control of Mr Mulder.

Proposals for the first seated stairlift were made just 75 years after the formation of Liftenfabriek Jan Hamer & Co. Mr Mulder’s grandson first encountered this product in America in 1960. He was so impressed with the idea that he decided to develop a stairlift for the Dutch market. The first ever European stairlift followed in 1962.

Brinkman

In 1889, Mr Brinkman founded an engineering company for the dairy industry. In 1920, the company developed a special kind of lift, the column lift, for customers who had difficulty lifting goods vertically.

Liftenfabriek Brinkman Jan Hamer

Both companies were taken over by Otis in the 1980s. They merged to form Liftenfabriek Brinkman Jan Hamer. This Otis subsidiary began to specialise more and more in stairlifts.

Freelift B.V.

In 1996, the company became independent once more and was renamed Freelift B.V. in 1997. Freelift focused entirely on the design and manufacture of stairlifts.

Handicare Group

Ten years later, at the end of 2007, Freelift became part of Handicare, an international organisation and one of the market leaders in the European health-care sector.

Minivator Limited

The first Minivator stairlift was developed by Dunstable Toolmakers in the UK in the 1970s. A few years later the design was purchased by Sunrise Medical. In 2000 a management buy out resulted in the creation of Minivator limited as Sunrise sold off its stairfit range. With stairlifts as their core product the range was able to benefit for focussed research and development and increased investment.

Minivator Group

With the arrival of new investors in 2004, the Minivator Group was formed, incorporating Minivator Limited, Minivator Germany, Minivator Shanghai, Sterling Stairlifts (America) and Companion Stairlifts.

Handicare Stairlifts B.V.

The Minivator Group was taken over by Handicare in 2010. On 1 July 2010, the merger of Minivator and Freelift resulted in the new company name Handicare Stairlifts B.V. in the Netherlands and Handicare Accessibility Limited in the UK.

Available option(s) for this stairlift

  • Powered hinged rail: With the powered hinge the track can be folded away from the doorway giving clear access.

Straight Stairlift | 1000

Straight stairlifts are the basic type of lift, designed for staircases without curves or bends. But, with a variety of different models, features and options engineered to meet the varying needs of our many users, you’ll find that our stairlifts are anything but basic!

Some of the straight stairlifts we offer include the 1100 model, our next generation stairlift with one of the slimmest rail on the market which comes with many benefits including grease-free rails, friction drive technology, swivel seats and safety sensors as standard. If your space is small and narrow, this is a great option.

We also offer the 1000 model, which includes foldaway seat, armrests and footrest to take up less space when not in use. The 1000 uses a slim, unobtrusive rail and offers 6 seat colors to choose from. Because it’s made with long-lasting, durable materials, the 1000 can also be upgraded to the more robust 1000XXL model.

Handicare 1100: the slimmest straight stairlift

The 1100’s strong yet super slim line rail is the narrowest on the market so it obscures less of your stairs than any other straight stairlift system. With its compact design and grease free rail, the 1100 blends in nicely with your interior and is a breeze to keep clean.

The Handicare 1100 is ultra slim and compact and can be placed close to the wall, leaving a lot of free space on the staircase for other stair users to safely climb the stairs. It’s the slimmest straight stairlift rail on the market! To save even more space, the stairlift seat, footrest and armrests can be folded when not in use. The seat will swivel at the top landing, making sure you can get on and off the stairlift easily and safely. Also, the 1100 comes as standard with safety sensors that will stop the lift in case of obstruction.

Due to the patented technology, there is no tooth rack on the Handicare 1100. This means that unlike other stairlifts, there is no grease or oil on the rail collecting dust and dirt, making the rail easy to clean and safe to touch. Your staircase will stay spick and span!

The robust 1100 is powered by Handicare’s patented four wheel drive technology with four quiet and reliable motors. In the unfortunate and rare event one of the motors breaks down, you can still finish your ride up or down the stairs. The lift is fully certified by the international stairlift safety standard EN 81-40 and designed for years and years of carefree daily use. Thanks to the continuous charge functionality you can park the seat anywhere you like on the rail: the batteries are always charged and ready to go.
The 1100 is suitable for users up to max. 140kg.
